Every time you call me
I wish you wouldn’t call me
I wanna throw my phone out the window
So when you don’t call me I won’t know
And I hate it when you text me
Because I like it when you text me
But I don’t even really like you
Which makes it weird that I love you
But it’s cool, and we’re cool, and everything’s cool
But it’s cool, and we’re cool, and everything’s cool
These days I don’t even miss you
Well except for the days that I miss you
But those days are happening less and less
At least that’s what I tell my friends
And don’t tell me that you need me
Cuz what the hell does that mean?
When it’s 2:17 in the morning
Am I supposed to pretend I’m sleeping?
But it’s cool, and we’re cool, and everything’s cool
But it’s cool, and we’re cool, and everything’s cool
Well I’ve gotten so good at pretending
That sometimes I forget I’m pretending
Until I see you at the party
And suddenly it gets hard to breathe
Don’t act like this doesn’t matter
Cuz I know it fucking matters
Cuz I see the way that you look at me
When you don’t think I know you’re looking at me
But it’s cool, and we’re cool, and everything’s cool
But it’s cool, and we’re cool, and everything’s cool
You only want me when you need me
When you’re passing through my town
When you’re feeling sick and lonesome
When your cigarette’s burned out
You only want me when you need me
Baby we both know it’s true
And even though you know I care, you’re never there
On those nights when I need you
You were on your fifth Corona
The girls were lining up for you to spin ‘em slow
The band was drinking and singing about drinking
All dressed up like an 80s rodeo
You haven’t given me a second glance
Shooting pool with your next dance
You’re the man of the hour for now
I’ll see myself out
Now I’m walking after midnight
And all you’ve picked up is the tab, it would seem
Cuz when I get home to leftover takeout
It isn’t long before you’re lighting up my screen
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised
You come just as advertised
And after all this touch and go
You wanna have one for the road
You only want me when you need me
When you’re passing through my town
When you’re feeling sick and lonesome
When your cigarette’s burned out
You only want me when you need me
Baby we both know it’s true
And even though you know I care, you weren’t there
On those nights I wanted you
And even though you think it’s cool, you were a tool
And I never needed you
about
The two brand new songs on It’s Cool, the new single by Lula Wiles, explore the complexities of dating in the digital age, the trio training its incisive, trenchant wit on the new ways we experience age-old feelings of disappointment, desire, and heartache. “It’s Cool (We’re Cool, Everything’s Cool),” is a rollicking, electric-guitar led anthem about the exasperating back-and-forth of loving at a distance, mediated by screens and hesitancy. The languid, lovelorn b-side, “You Only Want Me When You Need Me,” is a late-night, country-tinged lament of conditional love that punctures the pretensions of ambivalent men with the band’s uniquely self-aware humor. With It’s Cool, Lula Wiles further establishes themselves as Americana’s wildcard, unafraid of exploring knotty topics and turning convention on its head.
